Work on water supply infrastructure set for 29 May

JOHANNESBURG - Low water pressure to no water at all.

These are the scenes the part of Johannesburg will face this coming Friday as Rand Water is expected to begin major maintenance work on the City of Johannesburg’s water network from Friday.

The maintenance will continue on 2 June, before a second phase begins on 17 July.

Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo said it has convened an intergovernmental meeting ahead of this annual maintenance programme.

This is to ensure better coordination and preparedness

Often during these times, communities complain about poor communication or the unavailability of water wankers.

However, Mamabolo said he is adamant that lessons have been drawn from previous maintenance.

"From weaknesses in the past, we have considered that in most of the times when we had planned maintenance, our communication, readiness and oversight monitoring on the ground has not been at the level at which it should be.

"To avoid and make sure that we are much more organised, we had to sit down with all of everyone and say how do we make it far much better this time."

The provincial government is urging residents to use water sparingly during the period.

Officials warn that several areas could experience water disruptions or low pressure.

The maintenance is aimed at improving the reliability of the water network ahead of the winter season.

Water tankers will be deployed in various areas during this time.
