JOHANNESBURG - Loyiso Masuku has made history as the first woman to lead the ANC in Johannesburg.
Born in Butterworth, Eastern Cape, Masuku holds a B-Tech degree in Public Relations, Post Graduate Diploma in African Studies and Public Policy and a Masters Degree in Politics, all from the University of Johannesburg.
“I have served as deputy secretary for two terms, in this very same region. Before that I was secretary of the ANCYL in the same region. My roots are from the South African Students Congress which I have led at the University of Joburg.”
Her slate swept all top five positions. And the young lions say Morero must step aside and allow her to take over.
In the ANC, the appointment and removal of metro mayors rests with national officials.
And leaders of the newly elected regional structure insist the party remains the only centre of power.
Addressing allegations linking her to a multimillion-rand PPE tender scandal during the Covid-19 pandemic, Masuku maintains she's innocent.
"I stepped aside voluntarily, I was never charged. I did that so that the ANC can be afforded an opportunity to clear myself and I went through the integrity commission of the ANC, which found no wrong doing on my side. I went through the state institutions structures both the Public Protector as well as the SIU investigation, and on my side there was no doing."
She says the ANC will work to win back the hearts of Johannesburg voters.
It's a tough task in a metro with rapidly increasing competition for electoral support.
