A Zimbabwe journalist faces arrest again

HARARE - Blessed Mhlanga is out on bail after spending nearly three months in jail.

The HSTV journalist is currently receiving treatment in South Africa.

Mhlanga has fallen foul with authorities for his interview with President Emmerson Mnangagwa's political rival.

Mhlanga is not out of the woods yet with Zimbabwe's justice system.
He's being accused of violating his bail conditions and now faces arrest.

But his lawyer, Douglas Coltart, insists he did not run away.

"A warrant of arrest was issued for Blessed Mhlanga as he was not present at that court hearing. The medical report from the doctor where he is receiving treatment was tendered to the court. We remain hopeful that upon default inquiry being conducted that warrant of arrest will be cancelled."

Two weeks ago, Mhlanga made a presentation at a UN Summit on Human Rights and Democracy in Geneva.

He described the prevailing media environment in Zimbabwe as oppressive.

And the country's Media Alliance warns the issuing of the warrant is designed to intimidate journalists.

Nigel Nyamutumbu of the Media Alliance said the issuing of a warrant of arrest does send chilling message.

“It has an effect on the practice of journalism considering that the journalist in question had already spent some time in prison whilst the trial was even yet to commence. By doing so, there is definitely a culture of fear that then plays out within the media sector. And it's something that is of concern to the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe which we continue to implore on the government of Zimbabwe to continue use other means of dialogue when they feel that they have been aggrieved by the media."

Recently global media advocacy group Committee to Protect Journalists described the situation in Zimbabwe as inconducive for journalists to operate in.
