PRETORIA - It has been a year since the Madlanga Commission began its proceedings at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College.
The first witness was KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who testified over three days. He is expected to return during the third phase of the Commission’s hearings.
Following his briefing on 6 July 2025, Mkhwanazi alleged political and criminal interference in the work of the police.
His concerns at the time centred on the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). However, the Commission’s scope has since broadened to include the Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg metro police departments.
More than 100 witnesses have appeared before the Commission, with South Africans hearing testimony involving figures such as Katiso “KT” Molefe, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Brown Mogotsi.
The Commission is expected to conclude its oral submissions in less than two weeks, with the final report due on 16 November 2026.
