JOHANNESBURG - The arrest of Fleurhof mother Tiffany Nicole Meek in connection with the murder of her son has shocked the nation.
Meek is accused of murdering her 11-year-old son, Jayden-Lee, whose body was found on a staircase in their apartment block in May after she reported him missing.
But what could drive a parent to commit such a horrific crime?
Dr Andrew Spaumer, Child Protection specialist at Unisa, said child abuse is a crisis.
"The challenge is based on our ability to apply the good policies and the laws that are there," he said.
"It is clear that we've got the responsibility to report any suspicion of child neglect or abuse."
