The late pontiff was known as a Pope for the People. Many experts and scholars say his successor must be someone who champions unity. Of the Catholic Church's 252 cardinals, only 135 are below the age of 80 and eligible to elect a new Pope.

The Cardinals are expected decide on a conclave date on Monday. It's expected to take place shortly after the nine days of papal mourning, which ends on 4 May.
