Free Speech | Is satire under fire in South Africa?

JOHANNESBURG - It’s emerged that the home of a comedian, Anton Taylor, was raided by the special policing unit the Hawks, after he made a satirical video about the now suspended Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, in March.

Taylor portrayed a fictional Czech criminal who bribed Mchunu with a BMW and sex workers to investigate the Kwazulu-natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Usually freedom of expression wins the day in South Africa and Taylor says preventing comedians from making jokes is the most un-South African thing to do.

The Executive Director of the Campaign for Free Expression, Professor Anton Harber discussed this with eNCA.
