JOHANNESBURG - The 2024 general election shocked many in South Africa and beyond its borders.
The former governing party, the African National Congress lost its majority.
The new kid on the block, the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party caused an upset and became the third biggest party in the country within just six months.
But, no party got the required threshold and majority to form a government alone.
A number of options were on the table including coalitions – but the ANC being the majority, decided to invite more parties to join in the formation of a Government of National Unity.
