Health rights know no borders - SAHRC

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is taking legal action,
to protect access to public healthcare, especially for undocumented patients targeted by groups like Operation Dudula.

The Commission says healthcare is a universal right for all, within South Africa's borders, regardless of nationality or documentation status.

It has now filed an urgent application with the Durban High Court.

SAHRC's Chris Nissen says the Constitution is clear and says that the commission must ensure that all rights in the Republic of South Africa for all who live in it must be adhered to.

Given this, Nessen argues that nobody has the right to then go against the constitution.

"Illegal are not our problem but the problem of home affairs and SAPS. However the right of healthcare and education can not be denied by any group in this country," he says.
