JOHANNESBURG - Tributes continue to pour in for prominent political and civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson who died on Tuesday aged 84.
On South African shores, Jackson has been described as someone who played an important role in the fight against apartheid.
Reflecting on this role, ANC NEC member Lindiwe Zulu said Jackson should be remembered for standing up against all forms of oppression for black people across the world.
Zulu said Jackson stood up for black people despite facing enormous challenges.
“He stood up for us as liberators of South Africa. He should be remembered for mobilising Americans across the board. He stood up and faced a lot of challenges and harassment. All the time, he was in the forefront,” Zulu reflected.
She said young people should acquaint themselves with that history and take the baton from Jackson and continue the same struggle he diligently carried.
“His voice resonated until the end. The struggle that he carried throughout the years he lived, we must be able to carry it through."
In a statement on Tuesday, the Economic Freedom Fighters also paid tribute to Jackson praising him for his unwavering commitment to justice, equality and human dignity.
“We honour his legacy of courage. We stand with all those mourning his loss during this difficult time,” the party said in a statement.
