JOHANNESBURG - It's time to make your voice heard.

The 2024 elections are only a few days away and voters from all over the country are expected to head to their respective voting stations on 29 May.

Voting stations are expected to open from 7am to 9pm.

To make your voting experience as smooth and efficient as possible, consider the following tips on voting day:

1. Know your voting station

Confirm the location of your designated voting station beforehand using the IEC's online tools or by contacting the IEC call centre.

Voting stations are open from 7am to 9pm. To avoid long queues, consider going mid-morning or mid-afternoon, as early morning and evening can be busier.

2. Remember your ID document

Ensure you have your green barcoded ID book, smart ID card, or Temporary Identification Certificate. This is mandatory for voting.

After providing your identification, an IEC official will check and validate your identity and whether you are a registered voter. Your name will then be marked off the voters’ roll.

If you are not on the voters' roll but have proof that you have registered to vote, an IEC Presiding Officer must validate your proof of registration, and then you will be allowed to register as a normal voter.

3. The voting process

After presenting your ID to the IEC official for verification, an official will mark your thumb with indelible ink to prevent multiple voting.

Collect your ballot papers for the different elections (national, provincial, or local) and mark your ballot papers in the private voting booth.

Make a clear "X" next to your chosen party or candidate.

Place your completed ballot papers in the designated ballot boxes.

Once you have voted, promptly leave the voting station to allow others to vote.

4. Be prepared for anything

Check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. Bring water, sunscreen or an umbrella if needed.

Be prepared for potential waiting times, especially during busy periods. Bring something to read or listen to while you wait.

Be courteous to election officials and other voters. Follow instructions from IEC staff to ensure a smooth process.
