Reflecting on the Usindiso Building fire, two years later

JOHANNESBURG - Civil society groups believe the wheels of justice are turning too slowly regarding the Usindiso Building fire.

Over 70 people died in the blaze in the Johannesburg CBD two years ago.

The city has been found liable for the tragedy and is also accused of failing to maintain its buildings.

President Cyril Ramaphosa called the tragedy a wake-up call and promised to address the housing crisis.

But very little has been done so far.

Speaking to eNCA, Nomzamo Zondo from the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of SA, says when Gauteng Premier, Panyanza Lesufi, appointed Justice Sisi Khampepe to chair the Usindiso Commission of Inquiry, the organisation was optimistic.

Zondo says the inquiry found the city liable and also made several recommendations which were never followed through.

Instead, since the report’s release, survivors have been placed in temporary shelters where they still face difficulties.
