SA’s water crisis | Expert says wastewater works a major concern

JOHANNESBURG - Water expert Anthony Turton says fixing wastewater treatment plants can help address the water crisis.

He says it's concerning that about 60 percent of sewage produced daily goes back to rivers and dams untreated.

Turton says public-private partnerships can also help.

"The single biggest challenge we have right now is to bring our wastewater works under control.

"We produce about 7 billion litres of sewage every day in the country, and about 60 percent at least go back to our rivers untreated or at best partially treated."
