Severe weather | How to secure your property in a storm

DURBAN - Mop-up operations are underway in KwaZulu-Natal.

Rain, snow and strong winds wreaked havoc, injuring several people, damaging homes, schools, and other infrastructure.

One video showed a massive JoJo tank tumbling down a street in Umzinto.

  • Anchor water tanks and large containers. Water tanks should be bolted to a concrete base or secured with industrial straps. Tanks that are empty or partially filled are lighter and more likely to be lifted or rolled by wind.
  • Clear your yard of loose objects. Outdoor furniture, dustbins, toys, and gardening equipment can turn into dangerous projectiles. Secure or store them indoors when high winds are forecast.
  • Reinforce roofs and carports by checking for loose roofing sheets or tiles and secure them properly. Temporary carports or shade nets should be dismantled or tightened ahead of strong winds.
  • Secure gates and fences by ensuring that they're latched securely and fences are braced.
  • Trim trees and branches. Overhanging branches can break off in heavy winds, damaging homes, vehicles, or power lines.
