Troop withdrawal from DRC raises cost and mandate questions

PRETORIA - The deployment of the SANDF in the DRC has long sparked debate — from concerns over their mandate to questions around cost and sustainability. 

Now, with news of their withdrawal, those debates are flaring up again. 

The decision follows commitments to end hostilities and disarm armed groups, under the oversight of African multilateral organisations.

The mission was launched in December 2023 to support efforts to stabilise the region amid conflict with the M23 armed group.

Retired defence force general,  Maomela Motau had a discussion with eNCA and weighed-in on the decision and what it could mean for future deployments.
