JOHANNESBURG - Supporters of the DA and Action SA in Johannesburg and Tshwane want their party leaders to overcome personal animosity and work together in coalitions after Wednesday’s election, according to the eNCA MarkData election poll.
The full relevant results of voter coalition preferences for each of the country’s six largest metros were announced and analysed this morning in a live broadcast on eNCA (Channel 403).
Supporters of each major political party in every metro were asked which parties they would like their own party to go into coalition with if a coalition had to be formed – and which parties they found unacceptable as potential coalition partners.
Respondents also had the option of stating that they did not want their party to join any coalitions, but rather stay in opposition.
A thousand registered voters who intend to vote were interviewed in each metro. The margin of error is 3% and the presumed turnout is 48,8%. For a full explanation of our polling methodology, please click here.
In Johannesburg, DA voters chose Action SA as their favoured coalition partner, and Action SA voters chose the DA as their favoured coalition partner. For the full Johannesburg coalition preference polling results, please click here.
In Tshwane, the DA was Action SA voters’ coalition partner preference, and Action SA was DA voters’ second favourite after the Freedom Front Plus. For the full Tshwane coalition preference results, please click here.
In a major Cape Town surprise, the DA turns out to be the most popular coalition choice for ANC voters. At the same time, the DA is also the party most ANC voters reject as coalition party – a clear mirroring of the ANC divisions in the city. DA voters in Cape Town prefer to work with the Patriotic Alliance, and Patriotic Alliance voters prefer to work with the DA. For the full Cape Town coalition preferences, click here.
With the poll putting the MK Party on the cusp of a majority in eThekwini metro, their voters’ preferred coalition partner is the IFP – and MK is the preferred partner of more than half the IFP’s eThekwini respondents. But ANC voters also chose the MK Party as their preferred coalition partner too. For the eThekwini coalition preferences, click here.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, voters supporting the two largest parties (the DA and the ANC) definitively reject working together. Voters supporting third largest party polled, which is the EFF, preferred the DA as coalition partner. For the full Nelson Mandela Bay coalition preferences, please click here.
Finally, in the Ekurhuleni metro, things are more complicated. Supporters of the ANC and MK Party would prefer the DA as coalition partner, but DA voters prefer the FF Plus and Action SA as coalition partners. For the full Ekurhuleni coalition preferences, please click here.
