Hugo Broos confirms Bafana Bafana departure

JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed he will leave the national team.

The Belgian confirmed his exit during an interview with Belgian publication, Voetbalnieuws.

The 74-year-old leaves his post as the longest-serving manager in Bafana history.

He took over the reins in June 2021, running a highly successful five-year tenure that culminated in South Africa famously reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

He also qualified Bafana to two successive Afcon tournaments, including a bronze medal at the 2023 competition in Ivory Coast.

His departure means Safa will ramp up the efforts to find his replacement, as the Afcon qualifiers approach.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has previously endorsed Pitso Mosimane as his preferred candidate to succeed Broos as Bafana Bafana head coach.
