MELBOURNE - Australia has granted five Iranian women’s soccer team members at the Asian Cup humanitarian visas.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the players fear persecution back home in Iran.
They decided not to sing the national anthem before their opening match.
The women have been moved to a safe location and support has been offered to other teammates.
The move follows pressure from supporters and a call from US President Donald Trump.
He offered to grant the players asylum if Australia didn't.
