Lions deny spitting allegations

JOHANNESBURG - Munster’s Diarmuid Barron alleged a Lions player spat at him during Saturday night’s match.

The Lions lost 24-17 to Munster in the last game of the league phase of the United Rugby Championship at Thomond Park, Ireland.

Referee Andrea Piardi launched an investigation with help from the TMO, but video replays failed to reveal any clear wrongdoing by the Lions.

Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen has denied the allegations.

"We're not aware of it. We didn't see it. It's not in our character to do that."

After confirming their very first URC playoffs, the Lions are now counting the cost of the bruising encounter against Munster.

Injuries and niggles picked up during their tour to Ireland will decide whether the Joburg-based side will remain overseas or return to Johannesburg ahead of their looming URC quarterfinal.
