NEW YORK - South Africa’s Lloyd Harris is through to the second round of the US Open, after earlier successfully negotiating three rounds of qualifying.
Harris beat American Jack Kennedy in straight sets in Round 1 on Sunday, winning 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2 in an hour and 43 minutes.
It’s a massive boost for SA men’s top-ranked star after he battled injuries and inconsistent form in recent seasons.
The big-serving Capetonian will take on the winner between Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and 10th-seed Arthur Fils of France in Round 2.
Harris has previously enjoyed a memorable run at the tournament, reaching the quarterfinals in 2021, his best Grand Slam performance to date.
