Sundowns fail to reclaim top spot as Chiefs draw

JOHANNESBURG - Reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns will not lead the standings heading into the mid-season break after they were held to a 1-all draw by Siwelele.

The Brazilians needed a win to reclaim top spot from Orlando Pirates, who are inactive in the league this week ahead of the Carling Knockout final on Saturday.

But they could only draw in Bloemfontein, leaving them in second spot two points adrift of the Buccaneers.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have lost ground to the Betway Premiership frontrunners after being held to a nil-all draw by basement dwellers Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze's side were looking for their third win on the spin in an attempt to keep pace with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the table.

The Chilli Boys desperately sought to arrest an eight-match winless run, which has left them rock bottom.

It was not to be for both, as they had to settle for a share of the spoils.

The Glamour Boys missing out on the chance to go level with third-placed Sekhukhune United, who beat Magesi 1-0, to climb above AmaZulu.

Amakhosi now languish in fifth.
