JOHANNESBURG - Rugby fans around the world have often watched the Springboks play and have asked, "What do they feed them?"
Well, behind every winning team, there's a secret recipe beyond just training.
And for the Springboks, the strategy is knowing that salads don't win scrums.
According to Pick n Pay Executive Chief Marketing Officer, Katherine Madley, a proper diet plays a vital role in sporting success, and one unexpected favourite snack stands out for the Boks - banana bread.
Madley said it is one of the most highly nutritious snacks, full of protein and is easily digestible.
“It's a very good substitute for them. They eat a lot of it at halftime. And you can buy it at Pick and Pay, or you can make it yourself. The recipes are there.”
Madley was speaking on the back of the launch of Pick n Pay's new Springbok sponsorship platform 'Eat Like a Champion'.
She said the campaign brings to life an answer to an age-old question when watching the world champions play sport: What are they feeding them?
The answer, she said, is the fresh food and groceries from Pick' n Pay.
“We are the fresh food people that can ensure that every South African can Eat like a Champion too.”
Banana bread is just one snack on the Boks list.
According to Madley, in the next few months to come, the country will see a lot of content that describes what the Boks eat.
“There are also interesting things about how they make a lamb pasta. They eat a lot of meat and drink a lot of dairy, but there's also something for everybody.
In the same breath, Madley said she wants to do away with the perception that healthy eating is expensive.
"It doesn't necessarily have to be like that," she said.
