JOHANNESBURG - A major change in weather conditions is expected from Thursday as a cut-off low moves across parts of South Africa.
The South African Weather Service says the system could bring heavy and disruptive rainfall, damaging winds, rough seas and a significant drop in temperatures.
A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape.
Forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says coastal areas could experience waves of up to 5.5 metres, while strong winds and disruptive rainfall are expected inland.
The Overberg and Garden Route in the Western Cape are among the areas of concern as the system makes landfall and moves eastwards.
The weather service says the system could also affect parts of the Eastern Cape, including Nelson Mandela Bay and Gqeberha, where a Yellow Level 2 warning is in place.
Chiloane says further warnings for the interior could be issued once the system makes landfall and its strength is assessed.
The cold-core system is expected to bring a sharp drop in temperatures across several provinces, with the Eastern Cape likely to experience significant rainfall.
The weather service is urging residents in affected areas to remain alert to further warnings as the system moves eastwards.
