Fix the system, protect patients - Public Protector on Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

JOHANNESBURG - The Public Protector made a surprise visit to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Parktown.

The visit followed concerns about healthcare services, including medication shortages and administrative delays.

In May, advocate Kholeka Gcaleka highlighted systemic and administrative issues that delayed repairs after a hospital fire.

She has called for urgent solutions to ensure patients can access the medication and care they need.

"The reality is people are sick; there are chronic diseases which need to be managed. People spend money to come to Charlotte Madrake and as we know the majority of the people of South Africa do not have that money, they cannot afford to. So, people can come to the hospital and only to find that there is no medication," she said.
