121 tonnes of copper seized

JOHANNESBURG - Police have seized suspected stolen copper worth more than R12-million in City Deep.

A multidisciplinary team made up of Gauteng Crime Intelligence, Interpol, Border Police, City Deep and private security partners conducted the intelligence-driven operation.

This was after information was provided by Zambian authorities regarding three hijacked trucks transporting the copper consignment.

It's believed that trucks displaying false Tanzanian registration plates were allegedly used to commit the crime.

Further investigations revealed that two trucks carrying approximately 121 tonnes of copper blocks entered South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post, allegedly using fraudulent customs documents.
