CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa will not be part of the ANC meeting expected to take place on Wednesday night.
The meeting, according to the ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, will see the ANC’s top seven leadership bring forward matters they had already discussed, which will be tabled for the NEC to unpack.
“We'll process the judgment, and we will then follow with a position of the ANC post the judgment,” Mbalula said.
He was speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday.
Mbalula said the decision not to include Ramaphosa in the meeting was prudent because when they discuss a subject that affects an individual, that person must recuse themselves.
“We want NEC members to freely discuss, debate, and reflect on issues without any hindrance on their part, psychologically and otherwise," he added.
Mbalula said he expects the discussion to go on overnight.
Ramaphosa announced on Monday that he would take the independent panel report on Phala Phala under review.
Last Friday, the Constitutional Court ruled that the National Assembly acted unlawfully when it voted against adopting a panel report that found that Ramaphosa had a prima facie case to answer in relation to the Phala Phala saga.
This week, a defiant Ramaphosa said the Constitutional Court judgment on the Phala Phala matter did not require him to step down from office.
He stressed that the Apex Court made no findings against him personally.
