Authorities await test results after alleged poisoning of 300 EC pupils

JOHANNESBURG - Eastern Cape Health is probing how over 300 pupils from a KwaBhaca High School were poisoned.

They were rushed to healthcare facilities, vomiting and with diarrhoea.

The health department is investigating the source of the illness and is awaiting test results.

Eastern Cape Health spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said they are looking at a food or waterborne disease.

"Samples have been taken to laboratories to establish the cause of the illness," he said.

He said the majority of the pupils were treated and discharged and three remain in hospital.

"I'm sure by tomorrow [Monday] they'll be discharged as well."
