Axe hangs over Lesufi as DA calls for motion of no confidence

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance is leading the call for a motion of no confidence against Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

This follows a Public Protector finding that Lesufi's provincial crime prevention wardens – AmaPanyaza – were illegally deployed.

AmaPanyaza were criticised from the start, with much of the objection centred on their legitimacy, scope of powers, and role in law enforcement.

Lesufi announced the unit’s disbandment on Wednesday, a few hours before the Public Protector’s report.

The Gauteng government says the wardens will now be trained for absorption into the traffic police, Special Law Enforcement Unit, and other security partners.

The training will run for the next 18 to 36 months.
