Bird Flu Outbreak | Poultry producers continue to count their losses
JOHANNESBURG - Poultry producers continue to count the losses following the outbreak of a highly infectious avian influenza.
Gauteng has been the hardest hit for the H7 strain while the Western Cape is the hardest hit with the H5 strain.
The Department of Agriculture says over a million chickens have been culled since the outbreak.
This has been seen as the worst outbreak to hit South Africa since the H5N8 bird flu in 2017.
The number of newly detected infections on the farms is increasing, and the industry is urging extra caution.
It’s calling on producers to immediately report any indications of the disease.
