Businesses begin reassessing work locations - expert

JOHANNESBURG - Distance to the office may become the new sweetener in recruiting and retaining staff.

This as the cost of living and fuel prices continue to rise.

It's beginning to compete on working conditions and salaries as well.

Andrew Dewey of Swindon Properties said your location could either help or hinder businesses' recruitment of talent.

"I think the realisation is that the employer needs to now assess location over a number of other expenses in their business and make sure that the location of their office is suitable for the employees that they're trying to recruit or trying to retain.

"And what we're finding is that there's a fine balance between wage increases or salary increases and the cost of employees actually getting to the office or to the industrial space that they work in," Dewey said.
