'Chief Luthuli was reportedly assaulted with a shovel by white men' - Witness

PIETERMARITZBURG - A new witness in the Chief Albert Luthuli inquest has testified that her father witnessed white men assaulting the former ANC president.

The inquest into the death of the anti-apartheid stalwart continued in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.

The apartheid government's claim that Luthuli was hit by a goods train in 1967 is in dispute.

A warrant officer who testified last month, Sunette Nel told the court Chief Luthuli may have been assaulted before his death.

Nel was part of the team that reconstructed what had happened on the morning of July 21, 1967. The forensic investigation suggests that the injuries on Luthuli’s body were not similar to those of a person who was hit by a train.

The new witness, Sibongile Ndimande said her father told them that Chief Luthuli was assaulted by a group of white men using a shovel.

More witnesses are expected to come forward and testify as Luthuli's family and the ANC dispute that the late ANC leader died after a train accident.
