JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg's plan to increase the prepaid electricity surcharge has residents up in arms.
The Joburg council wants to increase the prepaid electricity surcharge from R200 to R270 a month, and network capacity charge from R130 to R200.
In our viewer question this morning we asked: How will you budget for this?
eNCA viewers who commented on social media platforms X and Facebook had this to say.
Facebook:
"What about catching all the people stealing free electricity?," says Penny Harley
"Increase for the paying Peter to fund the losses from the non paying Paul who is connected illegally," says Jason Naidoo
"So the poor residents of JHB must pay for the mistakes of the thieves and poor management of past and present? Makes sense...Why don't they just start taking the food off of children's plates as well while they are at it?," says Darryn Pennings
X:
"Someone needs to pay for the electricity bills of Soweto. They don’t," says @Bronx_wrangler
"The less you depend on the state, the freer you are. Grow your own, power your own, protect your own," says @NelMarcel
"Moving out of Joburg is going to be a strong consideration soon or we will see even more illegal electricity connections," says @iiamOG
