Cold season could plunge SA back to rolling blackouts

JOHANNESBURG - Eskom has implemented Stage 2 blackouts across the country.

The power utility says a higher-than-expected demand of electricity and loss of generation units placed their system under strain.

Eskom says extensive planned maintenance is also behind this implementation. The stage 2 load-shedding is expected to remain in effect from 4pm Thursday to 5am Friday.

The country was last hit by blackouts five weeks ago, on March 19.

The power utility also warns of the potential return of blackouts as temperature drops with demand of energy consumption rises.
