DA Federal Congress underway

JOHANNESBURG – This weekend is an important one for the Democratic Alliance as they vote for their new Federal Leader.

Elections analyst Wayne Sussman said the DA is likely to push for more youthful leadership.

The party currently has its youngest-ever mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, who's looking to replace John Steenhuisen as Federal Leader.

Several other young candidates are also contesting top positions.

“He got a very big profile in Cape Town as this young mayor, very good on social media, very responsive mayor, but now he'll have to build a national profile as the lead of the opposition because we know that he said he is not going to sit in the governor of national unity, he wants to run for re-election as mayor.

“And then you look at the deputy leadership positions, you see Siviwe Gwarube running, I think Cilliers Brink is running, so I think the DA is going to put on a very young face,” Sussman said.

It's not only new leaders who will be elected at the DA Federal Congress this weekend.

The party will also vote on key constitutional amendments affecting its in‑house operations.

Over 2,000 delegates are at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand for the DA's biggest Federal Congress to date.
