Death toll stands at 92 and expected to rise after Eastern Cape floods

MTHATHA - Search teams from the SANDF and the SAPS continue to trawl the Mthatha River for bodies after deadly floods thrashed the Eastern Cape over a week ago.

On Thursday afternoon the death toll stood at 92 people but this is expected to rise as search continues. Those missing include pupils that swept away when their scholar transport was pulled by raging floodwaters.

As the water subsides, residents are picking up the pieces, and slowly rebuilding their lives. Many are also in mourning, as the death toll continue to rise.

More than a thousand homes will have to be rebuilt following deadly floods in the province. Displaced families have been moved to temporary shelters.

The Eastern Cape premier, Oscar Mabuyane led a memorial service as the province went on a day of mourning following the killer floods that claimed dozens of lives.
