Three people have died and three others injured when a two-storey building collapsed in Doornkop on Sunday.
Investigations are now under way to determine the cause of the collapse.
Xaba family members say they were not aware the area of Doornkop where they were living had been deemed unsafe.
Three members of the family died when their house collapsed on Sunday.
Zintle Xaba said, "We started staying here, I think in 2021, since then no one has came to us directly and told us that it was not safe."
"However, we would hear from people that this place is not okay."
The City of Johannesburg says the area was deemed unsafe to live in and residents were relocated, but some later moved back.
ActionSA councillor Siyabonga Zwane said, "It was around in 1999/2000 they were given houses in Tshepisong and Bramfischer."
"So they were relocated to those areas? They were relocated to those areas and we are sitting now today with an incident that’s unfortunate that should have not happened if we had a government that was proactive to ensure that after they’ve declared this area a dolomite area they should have moved people away…There must be accountability."
"In fact, the mayor needs to ensure that officials account, how did they leave this area like this because they have been providing services knowing exactly that people are not supposed to be here…why haven’t they ensured that they remove people from here.”
