EMPD acting chief implicated in Madlanga Commission applies for special leave

PRETORIA - Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi has applied for special leave.

Mkhwanazi confirmed to eNCA in an exclusive interview that he filed the application on Tuesday and is now awaiting the outcome.

He says his decision to seek special leave is to allow the council to investigate allegations levelled against him.

During the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry last week, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified, how the EMPD official facilitated the registration of vehicles belonging to controversial tenderpreneur and attempted murder-accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The KZN top cop's testimony added to his claim that Matlala “enjoyed too much privilege from law enforcement”.

But the EMPD officer has denied the claims, insisting that proper procedures were followed.

“These allegations are unfounded and have not been investigated,” he says.
