DURBAN - Now that he is out on bail, suspended KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele wants South Africa to know he is innocent.
In an exclusive interview with eNCA, Nxele claimed that IDAC is being used to take him down.
"It's difficult to serve a government that is going to take you to prison for malicious charges like that. I'm one person that I don't want to be pushed," Nxele said.
"I'm not going to be pushed. I'm going to serve my time in the department and take full responsibility for everything and account. I have accounted in the department."
The prison boss is charged with more than 1,500 fraud and money laundering counts, dating between 2004 and 2023.
He has been granted R50,000 bail.
The court ordered Nxele not to speak to witnesses, remain at a specified address and surrender his passport.
The matter has been postponed to 16 September.
