MTHATHA - Sisonke Mbalekwa’s family says he was shot and killed while running away during student protests at Walter Sisulu University’s (WSU) Mthatha campus last week.

This was revealed by the family spokesperson Ncebo Kolanisi when Mbalekwa’s alleged killer appeared before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect, 54-year-old Manelisi Mampana faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Hundreds of Walter Sisulu University students gathered outside court calling for justice for one of their own.

The Magistrate's ruling, barring the media from recording, filming or taking pictures inside court, angered many.

EFF MP, Sihle Lonzi, slammed the magistrate, saying  citizens of the country have the right to know what is happening with the case.

The matter has been postponed to 2 May.
