Four dead in Mitchells Plain shootings

Mitchells Plain - Blood continues to be shed on the streets of Cape Town.

Four people were shot and killed in separate incidents in Mitchells Plain.

Three others have been left injured.

The shootings take place as the SANDF and police descended to parts of the country with the aim of tackling gang violence.

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde was expected to visit Mitchells Plain to conduct a walkabout with some of the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers in an informal settlement but could not go amid shooting incidents.

"I cancelled the walkabout because we need troops to be able to be on the ground where they are needed. I do not want to be drawing them away," he told eNCA.

While Winde has welcomed the deployment of SANDF, he raised concerns about whether the intervention will be intelligence-driven.

At the same time, he questioned how effectively Joint Operations Command function.

The Premier stressed the need to shift focus from reactive responses to proactive.

“We need to start hearing stories not of the shootings, but that intelligence deployed people ahead of the shooting, that we have arrested some of the gangsters and that they are now in the court system. That is the goal,” he said.

Winde added that it is critical to rebuild public trust.

“At the moment, there's not a lot of trust in the system. When intelligence comes, [questions arise if] it going to be used? And [whether] the individuals that come forward are protected sufficiently that they can feel that they give the detail around the actions that are taking place with gangsters in the region? "he said.

The circumstances surrounding the shootings are still unknown.

Police remain on the scene, as investigations continue.
