Four years since Parliament building went up in flames

CAPE TOWN - January 2 marks exactly four years since the Parliament building went up in flames.

The blaze lasted at least three days.

Firefighters worked tirelessly for more than 70 hours to contain the fire, which gutted the National Assembly Chamber, hundreds of staff offices, and the Old Assembly Chamber.

Construction and repairs were started in the first quarter of 2025.

Suspect Zandile Mafe was accused of starting the fire, is yet to answer to those allegations in court.

He's been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and declared unfit to stand trial.
