GNU Anniversary | Mashatile gives thumbs-up to the 'unity project'

JOHANNESBURG - The government of national unity has survived a year without falling apart.

The GNU was formed in June 2024 following the May 2024 elections. These resulted in a hung parliament. And on this day then, the ANC and DA signed a Statement of Intent, marking the formal establishment of the GNU and the appointment of the new cabinet.

Many hailed it as a political miracle, a testament to South Africa's robust democracy.

It hasn't been an easy ride for the parties involved, with problems such as the budget vote threatening to derail agreements.

In simple words there were some gains and lost opportunities.

But Deputy President Paul Mashatile gives the GNU a hearty eight out of 10.
