Gqeberha family killed in Easter crash buried

GQEBERHA - Seven family members who died in a traffic accident on Easter Sunday have been laid to rest in Motherwell, Eastern Cape.

The victims, four women, two men, and a 2-year-old girl, were travelling along the M17 between Kwazakhele and Motherwell in Gqeberha when the crash occurred.

Reports indicate that two Toyota Avanza taxis were chasing a female driver whom they'd accused of running an illegal taxi service.

She reportedly lost control and collided with an oncoming truck, killing all seven occupants.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Motherwell Sports Centre.

They were here to bid farewell to seven family members who passed away on Easter Sunday in Gqeberha.

The Binda family was on their way back from a family get-together.

Family spokesperson Siyabonga Changa said authorities need to step in.

"I think it's about time for government intervention. There's no way that you can be told by whoever that you mustn't buy a seven-setter-car. Or you mustn't buy a kombi if you know that you have a bigger family and you want to transport them,” Changa said.

According to Changa, the incident has generated more questions than answers.

And the family is yet to receive any communication from the police.

Motherwell Avanza taxi operators were present at the funeral.

Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Babalwa Lobishe they are yet to meet with the taxi industry leadership.

"We are still going to meet with taxi industry, yes they have been informal engagements with the president of different associations. Which we want to pursue in a formal basis. So that this harassment can stop. There's no one who has terrain here."
