INANDA - The family of slain KwaZulu-Natal police officer Mvelo Gcabashe is relieved that his killers have been found.
The three men accused of his murder were shot dead in KwaMashu yesterday.
They were also wanted for stealing his service pistol. The motive for his killing remains unknown.
In an exclusive eNCA interview, his mother, Thembelihle, said her son loved fighting crime and has said he would never back down, no matter the response from criminals.
She said Mvelo had previously been shot following an exchange of bullets with robbers during a housebreaking.
“We thought he would survive this time too, but it was too late.”
This week, three suspects were shot dead in KwaMashu, Durban.
The three were wanted for allegedly killing Gcabashe in 2025. He was killed and his service pistol stolen in Inanda.
"I don't know how I feel even now, but I'm very happy. And I knew this day would come, because I was in constant communication with the investigating officers, and I take my hat off to the investigating officers, especially one of them being a young lady who's done a sterling job. So I knew it would come.
“So, when I finally heard the news, I was very happy. Not that people are dead, but that finally we will find closure. Even if they were alive, there's nothing much that they were going to tell us, because I know why they killed my son, because they were criminals, and my son wouldn't tolerate criminals.
“Obviously, he was a young police officer who wanted, you know, the community where he comes from to feel that now there's a policeman in the area. So there is no explanation that was going to come from them, other than that the criminals, they wanted to do whatever they wanted to do, freely, without anybody interfering with their business,” she said.
