Mabuza's son described him as a firm and principled father.

"Dad was disciplined, structured and decisive, when dad made a decision it was final, and we all knew it," he said.

Mabuza's youngest sister, Zandile, described him as a responsible and strong brother.

"Your passing my brother has left us with more questions than answers. It’s hard to understand and even harder to accept that you are now no more," she said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the official eulogy at the service.

Ramaphosa praised Mabuza's leadership and legacy saying despite Mabuza's rise in politics, he remained a man of the people.

Ramaphosa also added that since the news came of the former Deputy President's passing, they have seen throngs of ordinary citizens, traditional leaders and political leaders from across the political spectrum flocking to DD's home in Barberton to pay his respects.

Mpumalanga premier Mandla Ndlovu also paid his final respects to Mabuza.

He remembered him for his service to previously disadvantaged communities.

"Former Deputy President Mabuza prioritised infrastructure development to improve the basic structures needed for our society to function. He advocated for the eradication of farm schools and saw to the construction of 7 boarding schools." he said.

A diverse group of South Africans turned out to bid farewell to the former deputy president.

Among them was artist, Lebo Thamae.

He says Mabuza played a key role in his career.
