Home Affairs welcomes sentencing of corrupt officials

JOHANNESBURG - The Home Affairs Department has welcomed the sentencing of its employee for fraud and corruption.

He was arrested for issuing birth certificates to undocumented foreign nationals in exchange for money.

Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, says it is in cases like these that his department spends money to get rid of corrupt officials.

This after the department was slammed for spending hundreds of millions of rand on litigation over the past six years.

Motsoaledi says the department has spent over R400 million in the past six years on litigation costs.

He says this is regarding cases against corrupt officials.

Motsoaledi revealed that they have had to hire private lawyers because officials hire high-powered lawyers in an attempt to avoid being dismissed.
