Hot jobs in 2026: Where to apply and where you'll face tough competition

JOHANNESBURG - Millions of South Africans are searching for work, stability and careers that can withstand a tough economic climate.

But where are the real opportunities, and where is competition at its fiercest?

According to Pnet’s latest Job Market Trends Report, demand remains steady across several sectors, while others are becoming increasingly saturated.

Pnet's Paul Byrne says the final three months of 2025 showed encouraging signs for South Africa’s job market.

“If we can continue that momentum into the beginning of this year, it will be a very positive start,” Byrne said.

He explained that Pnet analysed job activity over the past 12 months to identify roles where demand is likely to remain consistent throughout the year.

“There are opportunities across a range of sectors,” Byrne said. “In particular, sales and call centre roles are well suited to school leavers looking to enter the job market.”

Other entry-level opportunities include receptionist and cashier positions, junior property agents, telesales roles, as well as jobs in warehousing, dispatch, receiving and courier services.

However, Byrne warned that high demand often comes with increased competition.

“We’re seeing strong competition for roles such as administrative clerks, customer support staff, health, safety and environment professionals, as well as building and project management positions,” he said.

To assess where opportunities are most sustainable, Pnet analysed thousands of job listings across South Africa, focusing on roles with consistent hiring demand rather than short-term trends.

The report identified ongoing recruitment activity across 12 key sectors expected to remain active in 2026:

  1. Business and Management
  2. Sales
  3. Finance
  4. IT
  5. Admin and Office Support
  6. Building and Construction
  7. Marketing
  8. Medical and Health
  9. Maintenance and Repair
  10. Architecture and Engineering
  11. Warehousing and Logistics
  12. Manufacturing and Assembly
