Joburg CBD residents dwell in darkness five days after cable fire

JOHANNESBURG - City Power says it has restored electricity to 40% of the areas affected by the outage, in and around the Johannesburg CBD.

Several areas have been in the dark following an underground fire in service tunnels on Raheema Moosa Street that took place just after midday on Saturday.

The power utility blames Zama-Zamas for the continuous attacks on its infrastructure.

The utility says it will take around seven days to restore electricity.

This isn’t the first underground fire. At the end of March, a fire broke out near the M1 South under a bridge, affecting two lanes of the highway.

At the time, it was suspected that the fire was caused by cable theft and vandalism.
