JOHANNESBURG - The search for a missing female motorist has been called off for now.
Her car was swept away by flash floods while crossing a low-lying bridge in Sunninghill, Johannesburg.
Search teams have had no luck after nine days of scouring nearby rivers.
Ivor Rimmer of Search And Rescue South Africa says this is not the first vehicle to be swept off the bridge and is urging authorities to put preventative measures in place.
Rimmer said, "there's been flooding at that bridge, my first flood at this particular bridge was in 2001, where we also had a vehicle go over, so it's possible time to start thinking about doing something about raising the level of that bridge, you can't stop the water underneath, it's not the debris that's coming down, it's the amount of water that comes through there, and the only way to do that is to raise the road or to be able to close the road when the flooding comes."
