JOHANNESBURG - The battle for Johannesburg’s mayoral chains is hotting up.
The Democratic Alliance has entered the race with one of its most prominent and outspoken figures.
Helen Zille has officially been announced as the party’s mayoral candidate for the 2026 municipal election.

The former Cape Town mayor and Western Cape premier now has her eyes set on Johannesburg.
And she says it’s now or never.
"Joburg now symbolises the burden that bad government places on great people. But the good news is in a democracy the people have more power than their government, if they’ll only use it. They can vote for change, they can evict a bad government and demand better,” she says.
Zille’s known competitor will be the Patriotic Alliance’s Kenny Kunene, while the ANC, EFF, ActionSA, MK Party and others are yet to announce their mayoral candidates.
